We understand the initial apprehension of potential students from non-medical backgrounds when they approach Begin Ed India (BEI) for lactation courses. At BEI, we believe that promoting breastfeeding is a community initiative that includes people from all backgrounds. Therefore being a BEI Lactation Professional is not exclusive to people with medical qualifications. So yes, you can become a Lactation Professional even if you are from a non-medical background.
Begin Ed India encourages people with varied experiences and educational qualifications to enroll in lactation courses. We are happy to support everyone in this journey; starting from peer-to-peer support groups of mothers, ASHA and Anganwadi workers, nurses and other frontline workers to doctors, and super speciality medics.
With over 600 student graduates from Begin Ed India, we are proud to state that we have had several from non-medical backgrounds who have chosen to take Lactation Professional courses with us and are now successfully practicing in different parts of the country and beyond.
Once a student enrolls for a course, he/she is never alone. The Begin Ed India team supports them throughout and after the course, by engaging them in active groups of current and past students, meeting them online every month, helping clear doubts, and ultimately supporting with the successful completion of the course. BEI also helps connect students and graduates to practicing Lactation Professionals via conferences and ALPI (Association of Lactation Professionals India) to network and grow in the profession.
Another important way for Begin Ed India to support potential students is by connecting them to past graduates. These graduates especially from non-medical backgrounds can share their own experiences and thus, help in allaying some concerns about the courses and their scope. Therefore, it does not matter whether you are from a medical or non-medical background, if you are passionate about promoting breastfeeding, you are eligible to take the Lactation Professional course and forge ahead in your professional and/or personal goals.
